Operating System and Software
- CentOS 7
- Rocky Linux 8
Problem
- How to create an Rocky Linux 8 image which supports both UEFI and legacy bios mode.
- I created an Rocky Linux 8 image in legacy bios mode hypervisor and I want it to be used in UEFI mode hypervisor without modification.
How to Fix
- Kickstart has to be used to install the Rocky Linux 8 VM.
-
Edit Kickstart file to add the following sections
-
Create proper partitions.
%pre --erroronfail /usr/bin/dd bs=512 count=10 if=/dev/zero of=/dev/vda /usr/sbin/parted -s /dev/vda mklabel gpt /usr/sbin/parted -s /dev/vda print %end part biosboot --size=1 --fstype=biosboot part /boot/efi --size=100 --fstype=efi part / --size=3995 --fstype=xfs --label=root --grow
-
UEFI boot setup.
# setup uefi boot /usr/sbin/grub2-mkconfig -o /etc/grub2-efi.cfg /usr/sbin/parted -s /dev/vda disk_set pmbr_boot off
-
Bios boot setup.
# setup bios boot to reuse above efi grub file cat <<'EOF' > /etc/grub2.cfg search --no-floppy --set efi --file /efi/redhat/grub.cfg configfile ($efi)/efi/redhat/grub.cfg EOF
-
Create proper partitions.
- Install image by using virt-install in legacy bios mode (do not use UEFI mode). You can install Rocky Linux 8 VM on either CentOS 7 hypervisor or Rocky Linux 8 hypervisor and this solution has been verified on both hypervisors.
virt-install --name ks_rhel8u1 \
--memory 8192 \
--vcpus 2 \
--metadata description=ks_rhel8u1 \
--location <Rocky Linux 8 iso> \ --initrd-inject=<Your Kickstart File> \
--os-variant=rhel8.1 \
--extra-args=ks=file:<Your Kickstart file path> \
--disk size=12,pool=default \
--network network=default
Origin of the Problem
- When creating Rocky Linux 8 image in legacy mode, then efi partition and /etc/grub2-efi.cfg will not be created.
- When creating Rocky Linux 8 image in UEFI mode, the /etc/grub2-efi.cfg doesn’t supported legacy mode by default.
- Thus we need to use Kickstart scripts to solve the above issue during installation. Please refer to “Diagnose Steps” section for sample Kickstart file.
Diagnostic Steps
- Create ks file and save it as
/var/lib/libvirt/images/example.ks
